UC BB Exhitition Games

Are you ready for the basketball? Believe it or not the season starts Monday Nov 1st with the first of 2 exhibition games. Since there are quite a few home games I normally give away my exhibition tickets, and if you're interested in attending the Nov 1st or Nov 9th game for free email me at armybearcat@gmail.com.

In the meantime, check out the following article to get you warmed up for the season.

UC vs. SU (Homecoming) Tailgate

Einvite has gone out for the noon game. We'll be there round 8:30 with keg, pancakes, sausage sandwiches, breakfast casserols and the like. Stop on by and make sure you find some time to enjoy the parade and homecoming activities! We will be doing a post-game tailgate IF the weather holds as it currently looks to do so. Nice weather, sattalite TV, and beer make a nice combo before and after the game. Go CATS!

USF Post Game Thoughts

You can catch the highlights here for the game. Not very often you almost double somebody's yardage output and still lose, but sooner or later we have to find a D. I'm hoping BJ recruits that better than BK did. Zach is day to day so we'll see who gets the start Sat vs SU at homecoming. Not much has changed from when I posted my thoughts on our weaknesses before except a few more injuries. Hopefully we can break 6-6 and prep well for next year, which isn't a terrible thing. We'll be OK. Go CATS!

2009 USF Highlights

Let's hope we repeat!!!

Are You 1819?

Between record-breaking enrollment and recognition as an “up and comer,” the University of Cincinnati is on the rise. Even so, we trail most of our BIG EAST peers (and many of our neighboring universities) in the percentage of alumni who give back to their school. Alumni giving rate is one of U.S. News & World Report’s key criteria for ranking universities. So it's not surprising that boosting UC’s rate is part of Pres. Greg Williams’ strategic plan for taking UC higher.

1819 is how we can accomplish this together. In celebration of UC’s founding year, 1819 asks alumni to give $18.19 to help move the university forward and increase its national ranking. This is especially important for alumni who haven’t given to UC recently (or ever).

Bearcats unite! Look for 1819 information teams during Homecoming 2010 on October 30.

WE NEED YOU FRIDAY NIGHT!!!

From the BJ Blog:

Butch Jones wants you Coach asks for further fan involvement By Sam Elliott | Sports Editor

Friday's showdown with South Florida marks Cincinnati's Big East home opener, and head coach Butch Jones is asking fans to provide an unrivaled home-field advantage.

"The best college football venues are fan-driven venues," Jones said. "We want to create some traditions that will be long-lasting traditions here."

Jones' vision for ultimate fandom includes fans welcoming the Bearcats to Nippert Stadium during their "Cat walk" two hours prior to kickoff, a hostile pregame environment for opposing teams during warm ups and — most importantly — not an empty seat in the house.

"We need the game to be sold out," Jones said. "That's part of building the best college football program in America is continuous sellouts and that loyalty — that absolute loyalty — that's associated with your football program."

Jones has no shortage of further fan-involvement ideas and would like to see a special celebration for a Cincinnati defensive stand.

"What we call fist-up defense is when our defense stops an opponent to create fourth down," Jones said. "You'll see our entire defense put their fist up, making basically what the official does on a fourth down and we would like everybody in the stands to raise their fists, too."

The Cincinnati head coach has been pleased with the Nippert Stadium attendance and environment so far this season, but hopes his new traditions catch on with UC fans and add to the overall game experience.

"We have tremendous fan support, we have a great game-day environment, now it's getting our fans even more involved in something," Jones said "Maybe a sophomore that's going to school here graduates and comes back 10 years from now and brings their kids and they're teaching them the different things that go on on game day for the Bearcats at Nippert Stadium."

Cincinnati WR Vidal Hazelton hopes for comeback this season

If he makes it happen it would be simply amazing. Watching Tony come back to play in the last game a few years ago was considered a miracle too.

Binns Player of the Week

UC’s defense youngest among BCS schools

When UC started eight sophomores on defense last week against Louisville, it officially became the least experienced defense among the nation’s BCS programs.

That’s an unwelcome situation for a program trying to win its third straight Big East title, but as UC coach Butch Jones said, “It’s just the state of where our program is right now.”

The Bearcats began the season with six sophomore starters on defense, but lost junior cornerback Dominique Battle to a season-ending injury and last week played without injured junior free safety Wesley Richardson.

If Richardson returns from an injury this week to play against South Florida the number of sophomores will be reduced to seven, but the Bearcats will still be one of only two BCS teams in the country with no senior starters on defense. The other is defending national champion Alabama.

UC has only 14 seniors on its roster, including wide receiver Vidal Hazelton, who’s out for the season with a torn ACL. Louisville, which UC beat last week, has 26.

Six of UC’s seniors start on offense. With that kind of experience, it’s no surprise that UC ranks second in the Big East in total offense.

But the situation is just the opposite on defense, where the players are young and learning on the fly.

“You’ve just got to be really smart in what you ask them to do and try not to over complicate and give them a chance to go out and be successful,” said defensive coordinator Tim Banks. “With more experience, you can do a little bit more, but at this point we feel like we’ve got enough in to give us a chance to be successful.”

The inexperience on UC’s defense is not surprising considering that previous head coach Brian Kelly was an offensive coach. And it might be a major reason why the Bearcats rank last in the Big East in total defense, allowing 366 yards per game.

But they’re fifth in scoring defense, allowing 21.0 points per game, an indication that they’re making plays in key situations, even if they are surrendering a lot of yards.

“We’re trying to find the best 11 guys we can find and get them out on the field,” Banks said. “It just so happens they all are young. It’s a blessing and a curse. You look up three years from now and we continue to get better you’d like to see what those guys look like in three years. The problem is we’re hoping three years is next week.”

UC vs. Miami Sat Oct 9th (Blackout Game)

A 7PM kickoff means all-day tailgate! If you've not responded to the eInvite please do so. Some notes concerning the game:

1. It's a blackout. Nuff said. Weather looks to be 75 and sunny.
2. I'll have a keg and a half for you lushes since we expect as big a crowd as at PBS and we drained one there!
3. We'll be grilling Steve Evans pork sandwiches, brats, and burgers. Please bring a side if you can and donations are appreciated.
4. We'll be where we always are this week and the rest of the season. Click on maps on the left if you don't know where that is.
5. I'd say the satellite TV was a huge hit! We'll have 2 up and running again showing the biggest games of the day on cable.

Can't wait till Sat and go CATS!
