It's All About the Kids, Right?

Between them, they have 24 wins and explosive offenses with productive quarterbacks. Also, since early December they have had five head coaches.

It sounds odd, but it's true.

Makes you wonder why they don't just call this the Allstate Coaches Bowl. If coaching is all that, UC gets the nod over Florida 3-2. The Bearcats have had Brian Kelly, Jeff Quinn and Butch Jones this month, while the Gators have had Urban Meyer, Steve Addazio and (after a good night's sleep) Urban Meyer. Since Meyer can't be counted twice (it's my column) UC wins 3-2.

After all, it is all about the coaches, right?

Continue reading at the link above. Best article written on this whole mess but a great Bearcat.

If I had to script what I'd say leaving one job to take another, and how to do it with grace, this would probably be it. Note to BK, read how it's done with class. http://www.themorningsun.com/articles/2009/12/18/sports/srv0000007112042.txt

Traveling Fan Bases

UC has sold its entire allotment of tickets, asked for more, and is selling those. UF, not so much. http://ow.ly/16aRBF. I don't want to hear that crap about how well team A travels and how poorly team B travels. It's all relative and situationally specific. See you in LA!

Round the Horn

Heard in seen in UC sports.

UC Basketball plays at UAB Wed night at 7PM on CBS Sports. Tough loss to X over the weekend. Hopefully we can learn from it and build on the very good season we're having so far. UAB 8-1 and doing well.

If you're still looking for tickets to the Sugar Bowl call the ticket office at 556-CATS. Seems FL isn't selling their allotment and we've got some extras. Hope we get good enough that not playing in the NC means the season was a waste;)! http://www.gobearcats.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/121109aad.html

UC vs. X!

UC Acquires Additional Tickets For 76th Allstate Sugar Bowl

Dec. 11, 2009

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati has acquired additional tickets for the 76th Allstate Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1 against Florida in the Louisiana Superdome, the Athletics Ticket Office announced.

Season ticket holders may call the Athletics Ticket Office at 1-877-CATS-TIX to be put on a waiting list for the additional game tickets.

Tickets remaining after the season ticket holders have purchased will go on sale Wednesday Dec. 16, at 8 a.m. Sales will be in person only at the Athletics Ticket Office on the fourth floor of the Richard E. Lindner Center inside Varsity Village. Cash and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover) will be accepted.

The Bearcats are 12-0 and recently won their second consecutive BIG EAST Conference championship. Unranked in preseason polls, Cincinnati's undefeated regular season catapulted the Bearcats to No. 3 in the BCS standings this week and earned them an invitation to the Allstate Sugar Bowl, the school's second-consecutive BCS game.

No. 3 UC will close out the 2009 season in the 2010 Allstate Sugar Bowl against No. 5 Florida. The game is set for Jan. 1, 2010 at 8:30 p.m. EST in the Louisiana Superdome, and will be televised by FOX.

Seat Exchange is the Official Secondary Ticket marketplace for the UC Department of Athletics. Fans are able to view market prices, ticket supply levels, and seating locations 24-hours a day via Seat Exchange's website. Fans can view available tickets for 2010 Sugar Bowl and other UC sporting events at http://cincinnati-bearcats-tickets.seatexchange.com/.

2009 Cincinnati Bearcats Football Highlights

My Thoughts on BK

There are multiple sides to every story, and someday you could write a book on this one. One one hand, you can't discount the hard work he did here for 3 years above and beyond what any other coach would/could do. He had us one second from a national championship, something we would have laughed at 10 years ago, and made us see what is possible. We're on the map and have results and potential. Sold out the Sugar Bowl. Things have never been better for UC football.

On the other hand, he left so fast the door didn't have time to hit him on the way out. He doesn't owe the fans squat, but to lie to his players, not even thank UC in his press conference, and tell his team on the way out thanks for making my trip to ND possible is narcissistic. He might be the greatest actor I've ever seen, which makes it that much harder on those young men. This never should have overshadowed their accomplishments and the biggest bowl in UC history. I find it hard not to blame BK for that.
That being said, next man in! There are plenty of great coaches being interviewed, we're in fertile recruiting territory, the BE is a great conference, and with luck both football and basketball will remain ranked, allowing us to dig out of the financial hole we're in. Still a great time to be a Bearcat! GO CATS and eat some Gator in NO!

UC #19!

Amid all the football news our basketball team plays Miami this Thursday at US Bank, at X on Sunday, and has moved up to 19th in the country. Come out and support your CATS!

Dec. 7, 2009

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati men's basketball team climbed three spots to No. 19 this week in both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Polls.

The No. 19 ranking is the Bearcats highest since Jan. 31, 2005 when they were No. 17 in the ESPN/USA Today poll and No. 18 in the AP.

Last week, Cincinnati improved its season record to 5-1 with a 94-57 victory over Texas Southern. In the game, seven Bearcats scored 10 or more points, led by junior Rashad Bishop with 14. The 37-point victory was UC's largest since Mick Cronin took over the program in 2006-07.

Cincinnati returns to the court after a nine-day break for final exams on Thursday, Dec. 10 vs. Miami University (OH) at 8:30 p.m. at U.S. Bank Arena. Tickets for the game are available by calling the UC Athletics Ticket office Monday-Friday between 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. at 1-877-CATS-TIX.

What If??

What if we lose to Pitt? Would a one loss UC be selected for an at-large BCS bid? The consensus seems to be PSU or Iowa would be in over us. Some interesting facts to chew on as you argue with your B10 friends:

Cincinnati has wins over 6 FBS teams with winning records. (Rut., OSU, Fresno, USF, UConn and WVU)
Iowa has wins over 3 FBS teams with winning records. (Arizona, Penn St., and Wisconsin)
Penn State has wins over only 2 FBS teams with winning records. (Temple and Northwestern)
Every B10 team is ranked higher than their computer score. Every BE team is ranked lower than their computer score. (No bias in the media and coaches is there?)

The Big Ten was 1-2 vs. ND, while the BE was 2-0.

Last place Syracuse has won as many games against the Big Ten as it has won against the BE, one. Their 1 win against the Big Ten was against tied for 3rd place Northwestern.

The BE and Big Ten only played 4 games this year, with Syracuse having 3 of those. The record was 2-2 for both conferences. Obviously, both of the Big Ten's wins coming against the last placed BE team. And 1 of those wins needing overtime.

The first place Big Ten team (OSU) lost at home to the current tied for 3rd Pac 10 team. The current first place BE team (UC) won on the road at the current 2nd place Pac 10 team.

An last but not least here are the most recent unbiased Sagarin's College Football Ratings by conference. Notice how every human one (ESPN Power Rankings, SI Power Rankings) have the BE last and the B10 higher. Amazing how the data doesn't support it. No bias here is there???

CONFERENCE CENTRAL MEAN SIMPLE AVERAGE TEAMS

1 SOUTHEASTERN (A) = 80.84 81.11 ( 1) 12
2 PAC-10 (A) = 79.40 78.28 ( 2) 10

3. Did someone mention beer? The keg makes a return b/c what would eggs be without kegs? I'll make sure we have a full one since you lushes drained 100 beers in 2 2/1 hours before the WVA game!
4. I'll have the firepit going so long as the marshall doesn't shut me down!

Cincinnati beats Vanderbilt in first round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational

Call me a believer! Beating a tough, ranked, Vandy on a neutral court (who had all 5 returning starters) is a strong statement that UC is a team on the rise. Most impressive? Vaughn scored only 8 and sat for long stretches from foul trouble. Team didn't miss a beat. We couldn't say that the last couple years....

Brian Kelly: Tony Pike to start on Friday for Bearcats

In what I would call unsurprising news, Tony Pike to start Friday. I know there are a lot of different opinions on the subject, but in my humble opinion starters don't lose their job to injury. If you set that precedent, what goes thru the minds of your other starters? If I get hurt I'm benched? I think players start pulling back from trying to extend a play or not take some risks knowing if they go down they might not get back into the game. Not worth it in my book. http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20091123/SPT0101/311230047/1064/Kelly++Pike+to+start+on+Friday

Run Defense Revisited

The 'Cats have faced seven RB's rated in the top 51 in the country (based on Yds. Per Game). If you look at the yards per carry results, our run defense looks pretty decent.
RANK / PLAYER / SCHOOL / vs. UC / vs ALL OTHERS
1 Matthews Fresno 3.82 7.6913
Rodgers OSU 3.65 5.5118
Devine WV 3.52 6.0534
Todman UConn 6.23 4.9944
Carter Syr 2.63 4.5850
Dixon UConn 3.38 4.6951
Martinek UConn 3.6 5.15

The 'Cats held Matthews and Carter to their lowest Yds Per Carry for the season so far. As for Rodgers, only Cal held him to fewer YPC. And, only USF held Devine to a lower average. The only RB who had a decent game (on the basis of YPC) was Todman. Doesn't look so bad in this light, I think the fustration stems from our inability to get off the field in 3rd downs more than anything else.

UConn Tailgating Times

Game time is announced for 8PM on national TV, weather says 58 degrees and sunny Saturday, and your AP# 4 UC Bearcats are set to take on UConn! Of course it's amazing that we've yet to lose a game this year, but most importantly we've NEVER lost a tailgate! Some items to consider:

1. Depending if the temperature drops I'll have a firepit there to warm your hands from holding a cold beer all day.
2. We'll be grilling chicken and steak, but sides, appetizers, and desserts are more than welcome. If you're coming far and wide and can't bring anything no worries, we gladly accept Visa (just leave us your card) or leave some cash in the jar.
3. Did I mention beer yet? Shame it took till #3 to bring it up! I'll be doing a keg again so bring your frothy mug of happiness forth and fillith to the brim! Considering we'll be there all day, some of your are hiking a country mile to get there, and we can't fit anymore coolers in the truck a keg makes sense. Just don't let me down and make me leave with any beer in it.

4. NOON is the time to remember, although if we get highly motivated we may be there earlier. TV's will be out, games will be on, corn will be holed, and men will be merry!

GO CATS!

SEMO Tailgate Highlights!

Alright folks, my first foray into video editing and while it's not going to win an Emmy I've enjoyed my first movie making experience. For only one million dollars I'd be happy to work with your footage (legal mind you) and produce the same unbelievable highlights! A special thank you goes out to Mom, b/c honestly I'd still be pounding my keyboard with a hammer over this web site and the video editing software if she hadn't helped. Enjoy! BTW, please email me pictures/vids from the tailgate/game if you'd like me to post them here. Thanks

Don't Worry About The BCS . . . At Least Not Yet

Dan Hoard weighs in with words of wisdom. Simply the best writer and broadcaster of UC sports in our history. http://www.gobearcats.com/blog/dan-hoard/

UC BB Scrimage Highlights

From this weekend. Was open to the public. Very athletic and tall team. Pay attention to Lance, he's the real deal.

BE Earning Respect

Great article on how much things have changed since no Big East team was ranked in the top 25 preseason. Which is probably why those polls have so little credibility... http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/s_650000.html

BK Coach's Show

Includes pics and video from tailgating near where we set-up. Good review of USF game and also a in-depth look at football conditioning. Very well done. Mike and Steve look ubersexy as well on camera! http://all-access.cbssports.com/player.html?code=cinn&media=79863

Jaquon Parker Draws Early Raves

From Heard it From Hoard. http://www.gobearcats.com/blog/dan-hoard/

BTW, let this comment sink in. "Lance Stephenson is the most highly-touted UC recruit in years - maybe ever - and was named the Big East Preseason Rookie of the Year on Wednesday.'

That's in the BE, the best BB conference ever. With the one and dones we see every year in this league, the talent, the big names. Lance was voted best newcomer. Now that's saying something....

Without tradition, it's title-talk attrition -- and Cincy deserves better

Louisville vs. Cincinnati – revisited

Just remember without support and keeping BK, of which the practice facilities will help, things can change quickly....

“The Louisville game showed Cincinnati how high the mountain to winning is. Right now it's pretty much Everest. . . . The Cardinals are a half-step quicker at every position. …. The game attracted 21,086 souls to Nippert Stadium, half of whom came from Louisville.”

— Columnist Paul Daugherty in The Cincinnati Enquirer on Oct. 23, 2005, a day after Louisville beat Cincinnati 46-22.
