We Need you Saturday!
Student tickets will be sold out by lunch and our department is working hard to contact single game ticket buyers from this year to invite them back for Saturday’s game. With that said, you can help give us the best chance to sell out on Saturday afternoon. More importantly, we need to give 21 student-athletes the loud Nippert Stadium send-off they deserve. It’s amazing what this senior class has accomplished and their legacy will be remembered forever.
I started by sending it out to you because I know that this group can help me spread the word. To try and assist, I have drafted an e-mail for you to send out below. It has all the information you need if you would like to help me with a final grass roots effort to promote Saturday. Some of you may have already sent something like this. If you want, you can copy, paste, and send this out to neighbors, co-workers, clients, family, and friends. I’ve also attached our Fan Guide for potential new fans to read through. They will find parking information and everything they need to know regarding their game experience. You can tweak and be more aggressive with people if you want J
Here is the e-mail if you haven’t already tried something like this (Fan Guide Attached):
Friends of Cincinnati,
Your hometown Bearcats have a really important game on Saturday afternoon. Even if you aren’t a big UC Football fan or support another team, this Saturday is about having pride in the team that represents our city. It’s the last game of the season and all eyes nationally will be on Cincinnati. We need to send a statement to bowl committees and the college football world that we are here to stay. The best part? Tickets start at only $20.00!
The Top 5 Reasons why you should be in Nippert Stadium on Saturday afternoon:
1) Our hometown team is playing for its third Big East Championship in four years.
2) The early festivities and the pre-game $1.00 beverages in the new tailgate GRID. You can greet the team at the CATWALK starting around 9:40AM.
3) It’s the last home game of the season and will feature the Senior Day Recognition beginning at 11:25AM. There are many local players that will be honored!
4) The game is a 12:00PM KICKOFF and there is plenty of time to celebrate or get other things done after the win!
5) Fireworks, Skydivers, Cheerleaders, Band, and the loudest student section in the country. It’s the best entertainment value in Cincinnati.
Now that you’re obviously interested, you need to know how to order!
By phone: The UCATS Customer Service Center will be open and will be able to offer specific seat locations Thursday and Friday from 8am-5pm. The phone number is 513-558-2287.
By Internet: – Click Here! and enter “THANKS”. Tickets can be e-mailed in a PDF to anyone using this method!
In-Person: The UC Ticket Office will be open Thursday and Friday, from 8am-5pm. Walk-up sales will be available starting at 9:00am on Saturday morning.
If you can go, we can talk about where to meet once we get to campus. If you can’t go, I’ll ask you to still consider passing this on to anyone else that may be interested in this huge game.
Thank you and Go Bearcats!

Fun Fact for the Day
Just for giggles, I looked at the BCS conference attendance for Saturday. Our 48,152 was more than the crowds at the following BCS games:
Rice vs. Northwestern
A&M Vs. K-State
Baylor Vs. Kansas
NC State vs. BC
Duke vs. Virginia
Arizona vs. Colorado
Oregon State vs. Cal
UCLA vs. Utah
Az State vs. Wash State
UK vs. Vandy
La Tech vs Ole Miss
Not bad. We outdrew about half of the BCS games played this weekend. In a pro town, with the Bengals playing Sunday and UC basketball too. And X in season. And the Cyclones season started. So next time someone says UC can't draw smack them for me.

Catwalk Update
Our vision of the catwalk (2 ½ hours before the game) is that when the team gets off the bus, that the whole tailgate and GRID areas are rockin! We want everyone to be out of their tents, out of the Alumni Parking lot, and lined up cheering, yelling, high fiving the players! Believe it or not, this directly affects our players. So, this is where you all come in. I need your help firing up the people that are there! Bring horns, cow bells, shakers, pom poms….whatever you have!! Once you hear the sirens, line the street and sidewalk area. This week the catwalk will take place at 5:30 p.m.
Conference Alignment
Special Update from Department of Athletics
As details of ongoing conference realignment continue to change, we want to communicate relevant information to our UCATS members, alumni, fans and friends of the University of Cincinnati. University leadership continues to work diligently to appropriately position the University of Cincinnati in the best possible position for long term success in each of its athletic programs.
Recent Statement from University of Cincinnati President, Dr. Gregory Williams
“Given the developments over the weekend concerning the Big East Conference, I want to make sure that the university community has been informed of our position concerning the conference realignment situation.
I am optimistic the University of Cincinnati will not only remain relevant in the major college football landscape but will also be a strong and committed partner to whatever grouping of schools with which we align. While these are indeed challenging times as several major conferences experience shifts, the University of Cincinnati has a strong athletics program as well as highly respected academic programs, and both are tremendous assets that will serve UC very well as the changing landscape is negotiated.
Our preference as an institution is to remain with the Big East Conference. I believe that the Big East is the conference best suited to our student-athletes' needs and our university's future goals and aspirations. We are not seeking to jump to another conference. At the same time, I do want to assure our Bearcat fans and our university community that UC is not sitting on the sidelines but is and has been working on this proactively to find the best scenario to fit our needs.
As you might imagine, there are aspects of the situation that I cannot divulge at this time. But I do want to emphasize that UC holds a strong position as we move forward because of our competitive athletics programs and our academic programs, many of which are top-ranked.
I want to assure you that while some are concerned that this conference realignment is occurring at a time when we do not have a permanent Athletic Director in place, I have full confidence in Interim AD Bob Arkeilpane. He is fully informed and involved on this issue. We are continuing to move forward on our efforts to conduct a search for a permanent AD.
Please be assured that we are pursuing the conference alignment issue in a manner that will serve the best interests of the University of Cincinnati and its campus community as well as our fans. I appreciate the support and loyalty our fans have demonstrated to our Bearcat teams, and I want to thank them for their continued support.”
Call to Action
The University of Cincinnati continues to be as proactive as an institution can be during these very fluid times. Know that all long term conference options are being reviewed and the strengths our university are being leveraged and articulated to most appropriately position our athletic programs. Our strengths are many and they are known.
There is no greater strength than that of our fan base and loyal supporters. There has never been a greater time to showcase the support of our programs, our university and the community involvement from the city of Cincinnati. As our programs continue to be placed in the national spotlight it remains imperative that we can demonstrate the strength of our support on the national stage.
On Thursday evening the University of Cincinnati will play host to North Carolina State during a national television broadcast that will be viewed by millions of households across the country. This game is one opportunity of many that we have to continuously display the university in the most positive light. You play a critical role in the current and future success of our programs.
As university leadership continues to work on our behalf we ask that you answer this important call to action and demonstrate ownership and support for this program, city and university. A strong showing at Nippert Stadium is further evidence to the current and future commitment to UC Athletics. The strength of our programs resides with the very investors that make our success a reality. We appreciate the role that each of you play and we encourage you to participate if you have yet to purchase tickets to the game. Please click HERE and use the special promotional code "BLACKOUT" to access $20 tickets to this important national game.
We can’t say thank you enough to the loyal supporters of Bearcats Athletics. Feel free to contact us to learn more about how you can help play a role in the ongoing success of our programs.
We will continue to share ever changing information as it relates to the future positioning of the University of Cincinnati.

Mo's Thoughts, Interesting...
http://www.espn1530.com/pages/mo.html
Remember second week of December 2009? It was a busy sports week in this town. We had a 9-3 Bengals team getting ready for a road matchup against the Vikings, we had the Crosstown Shootout on the horizon, we'd just come off of RedsFest, and UC had just won the Big East title and completed a 12-0 season with a win in the Greatest Sporting Event Ever in Pittsburgh.
And all of those things were dwarfed by Brian Kelly.
I did 15 hours of radio that week. The Bengals recently completed game against Detroit and their upcoming matchup against Minnesota generated maybe five calls all week. The UC/XU game didn't even register. The busiest week of phone calls ever to our show was dominated by people wanting to talk about UC losing a football coach.
The calls were passion-filled, and there were so many different angles and opinions that it made for a great week of sports-talk radio.
During that week, here's the call I received most often:
"MO! WHERE'S BRIAN KELLY'S LOYALTY? THIS MAN HAS TO BE LOYAL! THOSE KIDS DESERVE LOYALTY! THIS SCHOOL DESERVES LOYALTY! THESE DAMN COACHES HAVE NO LOYALTY!"
I got that call a lot.
Fast forward to the last week of August, 2011. The Bearcats are preparing to begin their second season post-BK. Disaffection with the Bengals is at an all-time high and the Reds are wrapping up a thoroughly disappointing season, but the Bearcat football program has seen their season ticket numbers plummet by more than 20%. From Bill Koch...
With a little more than a week before UC opens its 2011 football season against Austin Peay on Sept. 3, season ticket sales are down 22 percent from last year.
UC, which went 4-8 last year after winning back-to-back Big East championships in 2008 and 2009, has sold 12,348 season tickets for 2011 compared with 15,899 in 2010.
OK, makes sense. Last year's team wasn't very good, there's kind of a wait-and-see attitude among fans regarding this year's team, the non-conference home schedule doesn't do much to inspire excitement, and economy is still in the dumper. And I'm not the kind of guy who bangs on people for going or not going to games. What you do with your money is your business, and deciding to not buy a ticket doesn't at all make you less of a fan.
But I can't help but think about all those phone calls...how upset people were, how passionate they came across, how they made it seem that the loss of an uber-successful coach made them dig their heels in, in unwavering support of the program. Those calls that week were from people who sounded like the kind of fans who buy in for life, regardless of the coach, regardless of the opponent, regardless of the quality of the team.
"MO! I DEMAND LOYALTY! AND WE JUST SAW A COACH WHO HAS NONE WALK OUT THE DOOR! THE NEW COACH MUST BE LOYAL TO THIS PROGRAM, TO THIS SCHOOL, AND THIS CITY."
I wonder how many of those people who didn't re-up for 2011 called my show that week, emphatically banging on someone else's lack of loyalty. I kinda wonder where their loyalty is to the program they spoke so passionately about.
These people spoke of an unconditional loyalty, the kind that transcends decisions to chase a lifelong dream by accepting a job higher up the professional rung. Notre Dame might be Notre Dame but damn-nit, we still wanted the coach to be loyal, right?
I guess loyalty is indeed conditional after all. We're willing to be loyal as long as the team is winning. Just like Brian Kelly, or any other coach's decision has nothing to do about "the kids," nor does our decision whether to financially invest in said kids. I remember those phone calls - "MO! BRIAN KELLY HAS TURNED HIS BACK ON THOSE KIDS! THESE POOR KIDS DON'T HAVE A COACH!" - and I wonder how many former ticket holders have turned their back on some of those same kids they expressed so much deep concern for. Maybe it's only the kids who are good football players who deserve our loyalty.
Look, I don't care who goes and doesn't go to games, and if you've decided not to buy into UC football this season, that's completely OK. You'll enjoy the season and follow the team to the extent you want, and so will I. Emotional investments make us fans, not financial ones. But next time we start hammering an outsider for not showing the program the loyalty we'd like them to, maybe we should look in the mirror and wonder if we hold ourselves to the same standards.

Football Announces Austin Peay Game Time
CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics announced Thursday that the football home opener against Austin Peay on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011 inside Nippert Stadium will kick off at 7 p.m. ET.
Other home game times and any television opportunities will be announced at a later date.
The season opening meeting between the Bearcats and Governors marks the fifth time the two schools have met on the gridiron with UC leading the all-time series 4-0. The last matchup occurred on Sept. 4, 1993, a 42-10 UC victory inside Nippert Stadium. All four of the previous meetings, dating back to 1985, have taken place in Cincinnati.
The Bearcats, led by second-year head coach Butch Jones, return 18 starters from the 2010 squad, including unanimous First-Team All-BIG EAST quarterback Zach Collaros (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville), as well as a trio of Second-Team All-BIG EAST honorees in running back Isaiah Pead (Columbus, Ohio/Eastmoor Academy), linebacker J.K. Schaffer (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle), and wide receiver D.J. Woods (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville).

Preseason Rankings
BTW, we can all criticize and support Cronin in different ways, but he accepted almost half of what NC State was offering to stay in Cincinnati with some program improvements. $1.4M per year vs. over $2M there, both long-term contracts. Ponder that for a moment, how many coaches would do that? For UC? For all the talk of "loyalty" in sports this is the best example I can think of putting your money where it counts. BTW, he's still in the lower half of BE coaches' salaries. Heck, Marquette's coach makes more!
Loyalty is a two-way street though, and winning and growth isn't linear in sports. I think we're on the right PATH, but it's not a straight climb. Hopefully fans will keep that in perspective, especially in the brutal BE facing 8 HOF coaches every year with bigger budgets than we currently have.
GO CATS!
